It was a protest against modern technology. The canopy on top represented security.

I never gave it much thought to be honest. It seemed to fit into the 1960's "Victorian and Edwardian craze that was abundant then.
I guess we can see whatever we want in things there is no straight answer...anything to do with the Prisoner isn't straight black and white.

It was a warning that we are progressing to fast as a society, & that we should slow down & hold fast any ideas about progressing for our own sakes.

I don't think that's the answer... think about: it a modern man with a modern mind like McGoohan ranting about technology with a bike image? Doesn't make much sense...

My take on this is that the Penny Farthing bike represents a victorian-like way of thinking with the same old, established ideas that are unquestioned and followed by the mass even if are mostly proven to be untrue and unpractical (also note the parallelism of this line of thinking with the way that the village inhabitants think and live their lives).

Hi Everyone,

I seem to remember Patrick McGoohan voicing his concerns about the rapid rate of technological growth in the Warner Troyer interview of 1977. I'm not sure if I'm correct in this (do you remember, Jan?) but I think he mentioned that the Penny Farthing was a representation of this concern.
