My first reactions to this remake, rumours of which have been circulating for an extremely long time, were those of excitement and dread in equal measures!

However i was surprisingly quite captivated by the first episode...but unfortunately already it seems to be losing steam! To say Jim Caviezel's acting is rather wooden is an understatement. He lacks the passion and charisma of Macgoohan unfortunately.

I wanted to give this a chance and try not to be too precious about the original series.. But i guess after only seeing 3 episodes it's a bit early to give an accurate opinion.

I must say that I'm highly enjoying it thus far. Of course it isn't going to be as good as the original, but with that said...it's taking a much more realistic view on the idea of 'the village.'SPOILER For example, in the orignal number 1's existence is something mysterious and wonderful, and no explination as to who or what s/he is given by number 2. In real life circumstances this would cause civil unrest, at least in the new series this problem is dealt with (even if it is a lie I don't know if it is or not yet but that's beside the point.) The inclusion of children helps create the image of a fully functioning village. And of course the big question "why dd you resign" being more or less ripped from the entire tale is very clever. In the original it was never explained why they cared so much, sure they like to know things, but come on...it was so unrealistic to go through so much hustle and bustle just to get one sentence out of a man. I this new series really wants to impress they should kill...or at least try to kill nunmber 6. Because ultimatly it isn't what number 6 knows that's important,it's making sure he can't share that information that's important.
So while the original is of course more interesting, keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, and this one...well not exactly doing that. The new version thus far has lot of knew ideas, explinations and lines of logic which I think are going to keep me satisfied all the way through to the end.

Well, I too was a little concerned about a remake but this isn't a remake as someone else has already stated, it's a re-interpretation of the original.

That said, you can't watch it and compare, you need to watch it for what it is. It's a cleverly written series that, by the existance of this discussion thread, has already created a lot of debate.

The original spurned many causes for debate and even its own Six of One society, this series could very well do the same dependant upon one thing..........

DO NOT go and spoil it by trying to make it into a cash cow, it is what it is, a single 6 episode series.

DO NOT try sucking the life from the concept with several seasons/series that clutch at straws in storylines drawn from the initial episodes, as has been done with Lost etc.

DO NOT try and seduce its fan base with spin off series based on other characters etc, etc, etc.

Show all '6' episodes (an excellent number) and maybe repeat them from time to time but please don't try and squeeze more from a great concept than it can offer. You will be letting yourself down if you do.

I like the new series, it's a great new take on an old classic and can only help the younger generation appreciate a thinking mans TV series. Who know's they may even get drawn into the original from watching the new one.

When I first saw the first episode I didn't like it, and what really jarred was the reference to '2' and '6', instead of 'Number 2' and 'Number 6'.

But now I have the DVD and watched the whole series I love it! But I think it is by and large down to the skill and charm of Sir Ian and the talents of the excellent supporting cast rather than a somewhat bland and uncharming Jim Caviezel
